What is a Trade Apprenticeship?
A Trade Apprenticeship is the most popular pathway to getting your trade.
A Trade Apprenticeship is an employment contract between you and a qualified employer for a period of 3-4 years, subsidised by the state government. Your employer provides hands-on experience and know-how and engages a training provider, like CTI, to provide the formal training, because your employer is too busy to be expected do it all and, in many cases, doesn’t cover the full range of work required for the qualification.
Trade Apprenticeships can be full-time or part-time or school-based. (School-based apprenticeships are typically one day per week on the job site).
Why complete a Trade Apprenticeship?
A Trade Apprenticeship allows you to learn and earn at the same time, unlike traditional university qualifications where you pay to do the learning and then find the job to do the earning (and of course, continued learning).
A trade requires a hands-on learning experience and the best way to learn this is within a structured training program with an employer showing you the ropes and a training organisation taking care of the industry’s agreed training requirements and standards. An employer cannot do it all, and neither can a training organisation so we team up.
At the completion of a Trade Apprenticeship, you will have a formal trade qualification and this means you can ask for a higher hourly rate than unqualified labourers and you can work on projects that require qualified trades people.
A trade qualification is the foundation for further qualifications and a lifelong career with many opportunities including site and project supervision and project management and estimating and building to name a few.
What does a Trade Apprenticeship cost?
If you’re eligible (see below), you could receive fee-free training for your trade qualification.
Eligibility
Are you:
- 15 years or over?
- No longer at school?
- Living or working in NSW?
- An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen?
If you answered yes to all four questions, you’re eligible for NSW Smart and Skilled Training.
If you are under 15 you could be eligible for a school-based apprenticeship, ask us how.
How does the Formal Training Work?
We accept enrolments year-round, so you can start your apprenticeship as soon as you have an employer, at any time of the year. Once you have completed enrolment, you’ll attend a full-day practical workshop every 4–6 weeks, where you’ll train alongside other apprentices on a mix of individual and group based full scale projects and classroom activities. Additionally, you’ll have access to online learning resources and ongoing support for your studies.
Next steps?
- Find an employer, do a work trial and start on the job training.
- Complete the contact and enrolment paperwork, don’t worry we make this simple.
- Attend workshop training, log hours & jobs and complete assessments.
